The Trial of Dr. Chua
Chua, 45, has been held in the Camden County jail since September 2006 when he was arrested and charged with the drug overdose death of Jamie Carter III. Prosecutors say Carter, 20, died from drugs Chua prescribed for no legitimate medical purpose.

Doctor testimony about incomplete medical records

Testimony resumed about 2:25 p.m., after Judge Amanda Williams settled a disagreement about the line of questioning by defense attorney Donald Samuel.

Jacksonville physician Bill Jacobs returned to the witness stand and testified medical records did not indicate whether Jamie Carter finished a prescription for Demerol.

Jacob's testimony was repeatedly interrupted by sidebars -- meetings at the judge's bench outside the earshot of jurors to clarify evidence presented during questioning by Samuel.

During a review of Carter's medical history, the initial assessment included complaints about headaches, blackouts and a prior automobile accident.

It's possible the assessment about Carter's fears about being labeled a drug seeker could inaccurately label him as an addict, Jacobs testified.

Samuel chronicled the drugs prescribed after each doctor's visit, including pills, nasal sprays and patches. The drugs were all prescribed to help Carter deal with his headaches and "other medical complaints."

Though Carter tested positive for cocaine use on Sept. 24, 2005, he never failed a subsequent test for illicit drugs, including tests after his death, Jacobs said.

Even when doctors made a mistake and their patients become addicted on pain medication, the physicians are still practicing medicine, Samuel said.

Jacobs said it is "good medicine" for doctors to destroy medications returned by patients, not store it in a desk drawer like Chua apparently did.

Based on the level of methadone in Carter's blood at the time of his death, there's no way to determine how much of the drug he took because he could have vomited after taking the medication.

But there was no evidence to indicate whether Carter vomited the day of his death, Jacobs said.

The low level of methadone didn't indicate how much he took, just that Carter hadn't taken the medication for an extended period of time, Jacobs testified.

On Dec. 9, 2005, medical records show Carter was prescribed methadone, but there is no record the patient ever visited Chua's office that day.

The records say nothing about Carter being hospitalized that day or that he was prescribed pain medication.

There was no mention about methadone, which Jacobs said should have been recorded in the medical records.

"The office record is not consistent with the hospital records," Jacobs said. "The office notes don't make any sense based on what happened that day."

But, Chua did see Carter in the hospital the day before and the day of his release,

Why in the world didn't this doctor try to find out why the patient was having such severe headaches? It seems logical to think that would be the first thing a doctor would do instead of continuely feed him drugs. And now they're saying his headaches came from a car accident. At first, it was said it was caused from being hit in the head by a baseball when he was in school. What gives?

Sometimes a patient tells you anything and everything to get their next high. If only Dr. Chua could have realize this guy was a drug addict and cut all ties with him.

A doctor that's a good doctor can see the signs of a drug addict, if Jamie was a addict or not the doctor still inabled this...to the point he couldn't control it and Jamie died.....It would have been a blessing if he had never created the ties with Jamie as he did...........

20 doctor's in the three years before Jamie went to Dr. Chua and not one reported that Jamie might have even a slight abuse problem with the drugs he was getting from them, or any drug for that matter. Jamie's parents and family aparently had not a clue of any drug abuse problem, otherwise I don't doubt for a minute that they too would have gladly informed any doctor including Dr. Chua.

When Jamie went to Dr. Chua he went there for "legitimate" treatment for chronic headaches and chronic physical pain. Dr. Chua was treating these symptoms with meds all at moderate and safe levels as testified by ALL experts put on the witness stand so far.

The testimonies and TRUTH is finally coming out. Jamies pain was so severe that it made him do irrational things like see multiple doctors at once and opt to modify his pain medication dosage on his own.

The TRUTH is finally coming out.

DR. Chua is an EXCELLENT doctor.

Jamie might very well be alive today if he could have acted like a responsible patient and seek treatment from one doctor at a time, but his chronic pains were so severe that this was not possible. When you are in pain you imediately try to find out how to get out of pain. There is no shame in that!

It's hard to imagine how badly this man suffered from his pain. God Bless Jamie.

Shouldn't the doctor have been smarter than the patient, tho?

It is surprising that with the potentially highly addictive drugs that were prescribed to Jamie over the years before his death, that not one of these 15+ doctors ever noted in the patients medical records that Jamie "may" have a drug abuse or addiction problem. All this is evidence that Jamie must have taken these perscribed drugs in a rational manner. So that confirms that when Jamie came to Dr. Chua to see if maybe he could rid him of his severe pains, mental and physical, not to get drugs to support a abusive dependancy. He came to Dr. Chua for "legitimate" medical reasons.

This is probaly why (probably because it hasn't been proven in court yet, but I suspect it will) Dr. Chua found reason to trust Jamie as he was a good person and showed aspirations of being a doctor himself someday. It all is starting to make sense now.

There is no "smarter" mind than the patient being honest with their medical problem and their their past knowledge and the doctor with their knowledge working in unison to try and solve the patients illness or problems.

Ideally, everyone should have a good strong medical relationship with their doctor and have the ability to trust them.

Even to the point of living with them?

It is surprising that" Obviously you haven't been following the case very closely: Jamey was drug tested on multiple occasions in at least two different hospitals and two private MD's offices. A drug test shows a suspicion of drug abuse. Dr. Chua had access to medical records from when Jamey was in the ER in September where ER-MD diagnosed "drug abuse." This was discussed on Monday.

I don't understand why "Chua supporters" don't wise up and recognize that a trouble gentleman who suffered with the disease of addiction died because a MD couldn't say "no" to his patient, who happened to be his employer, and housemate. This is after Wednesday testimony that Dr. Chua had had a homosexual liason with a 16 year old BOY.

Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this website. It's
simple, yet effective. A lot of times it's very difficult to get that "perfect balance" between user friendliness and visual appearance. I must say you've done a very
good job with this. Additionally, the blog loads super quick for me on Firefox.
Outstanding Blog!
